Indian Premier League (IPL) is an annual event and this Twenty20 (T20) cricket league has been popular since its inception in 2007. The IPL brought speed to the game. It made cricket fast. But the most important thing in IPL is the auction of players.

Every year, teams look for players that can win matches. All IPL franchises try hiring as many all-rounders as they can or at least they try to keep their squads well-balanced with batsmen and bowlers. An annual player auction takes place before the start of the league where players are hired by offering huge prices.

How Are Players Auctioned In IPL?

A franchise consists of 19-25 players with a maximum of 8 players from international teams. But the 11 players selected for playing can have a maximum of 4 overseas players.

Also, the franchises are free to retain their existing players or change the entire team. An IPL contract is usually made for a year but could be renewed at the end of a season. Or the franchises can choose to include new players in their teams at the start of a new season.

Players set themselves a base price at the start of the auction and join the franchise that offers the highest bid for them. Also, franchises bid for players according to their budgets.

When Does IPL Auction Take Place?

IPL auction is a major event as it decides which player will play from which franchise. Also, hiring leading players is considered a guarantee of success. The auction takes place much before the start of the league.

For IPL 2023, the auction took place on 23 December 2022 in Kochi. There were 991 players available for the auction but only 405 players were hired by the 10 participating franchises.
