Hero Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23 could be seen as a rebirth of football after a brief suspension of the sporting event in 2020 March due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The ISL 2019-20 final was also played behind closed doors in Goa.

Considering the setback sports across the world received due to the pandemic situation, it can be said the ISL 2022-23 gave a new lease of life to the sporting event. Also, the organizers have promised a longer calendar and more action.

In 2019-20, ATK beat Chennaiyin FC in the final. Also, it was the third title of the football club.

In 2020-21, Mumbai City FC emerged victorious after beating ATK Mohun Bagan. It was the time when COVID-19 was at its peak and the matches were played behind closed doors.

In 2021-22, Hyderabad FC lifted the ISL title with flying colors. It beat Kerala Blasters in a closely-held final match.

ISL 2022-23

ATK Mohun Bagan emerged victorious in the ISL 2022-23 season. In the final match, it met Bengaluru FC in a close contest and sealed the title in a penalty shootout. It was a big win for ATK Mohun Bagan as the league was played with new rules.

The organizers promised to make the league more interesting by tweaking some rules. Also, the viewers were expecting superb action after the game was resumed post-COVID-19 suspension.

When Did ISL 2022-23 Start?

The much-awaited ISL 2022-23 season started on 7th October 2022 and continued to 26th February 2023. The playoffs, semi-finals, and finals were played in March 2023. Also, the tournament was made more interesting by adding new rules to the game. The organizers had already hinted at making small changes to the rules so the game becomes more entertaining.

How Many Teams Played ISL 2022-23?

There were 11 teams in the tournament and they played a total of 20 games out of which 10 games were played at home and the remaining 10 games were held away. 

What Were The New Rules Introduced In ISL 2022-23?

The organizers introduced a new format called a play-off league. It involves bringing the top 6 teams to reach the final stage. The top two teams will get direct entry to the semi-final and the remaining teams will fight for another semi-final. The new rule allowed more teams to claim the title. If a team can perform at the knock-out stage, it can play the semi-final and even the final.

The biggest advantage of this addition is that it added two more matches to the calendar. The attractive football players had more action to see. Also, the organizers decided to hold the matches between Thursday and Sunday. In other words, the matches were organized on weekends when the viewers can easily find time to see the action.

Star Sports and Star Sports HD TV were the official media partners of ILS 2022-23. These channels provided live telecasts of the matches directly from the stadiums. Additionally, Disney+ Hotstar and Jio TV streamed the matches on the web.
